Diagnosis: Granulation tissue and chronic
active cystitis with
scattered giant cells. Comment: The
atypical mesenchymal cells seen in this case may be seen in cystitis as
well as
in the normal lamina propria of the bladder. In the first description
of these
cells it was coined the term giant cell cystitis but it is our opinion
that the
finding does not constitute a distinctive entity. These cells are
enlarged, hyperchromatic
and show multiple nuclei. Similar cells may be seen in lamina propria
after radiation
or chemotherapy.
